Sleeping Pills Pros And Cons

When we are awake our brain and our nervous system are in a continuous state of activeness and attention. Our brains and nervous system cannot sustain this continuous state of alertness for long period of times. Hence it needs to rest so that when the individual awakens them and go about their daily routines without having any difficulties.

There are many sleep disorders that prevent us from getting a good night’s rest. One of the most prominent disorders is insomnia that relates to difficulty in the patient falling off to sleep. People suffering from this condition might not be able to get sleep for many nights in a row. Even if they do manage to fall off to sleep, they do so only out of pure exhaustion and sleep for very short periods of time. One of the ways to get over this sleep disorder is by way of sleeping pills.

Advantages of sleeping pills

Sleeping pills as mentioned above can provide a great deal of relief as far as obtaining sleep is concerned. These pills have got chemical substances within them that mimic the natural chemicals present in the body that are responsible for inducing sleep in an individual. Thus these pills provide a great deal of relief to people suffering from insomnia, depression, and trauma.

Disadvantages of sleeping pills

The obvious of disadvantage of these pills are that they become addictive if consumed continuously over a period of time. The patients that are using these pills become so dependent on them that they find it impossible to sleep without the help of these pills. In some cases due to prolonged consumption of these chemical substances, the body’s natural chemical balance is disturbed and this can be particularly harmful for the individual.

Thus along with counseling, medical help is sought to get over this addiction.
Just as every coin has two sides so does sleeping pills have their pros and con’s. Under moderation, these pills can be of immense beneficial use. However when the use of this substance is taken in excess or is abused then it leads to the disadvantages of this substance coming to the fore.
